Telluride
Paraglide
Experience the next best
thing to having wings as you soar high above the
Telluride valley with an experienced USHGA Tandem
instructor. Adrenaline junkies can launch off the top of
Gold Hill at the ski area summit with a 3,500+ descent
and catch a bird’s eye view of towering peaks, plush
alpine mesas and the historic town of Telluride during a
paraglide ride
"Clear.
“Launch!" The instructor yells as the student starts
running as fast as he can down the snow-covered slope,
just as he was told to do in a pre-flight briefing only
moments ago. The sensation of weightlessness hits
instantly as the ground quickly recedes beneath dangling
feet. All of a sudden, student and instructor are
airborne.Snow-riders below stare up in amazement as the
big bird with two riders soars silently overhead, making
huge “S” turns high above the ski slopes. "You will
never forget your first paragliding flight," says
Telluride instructor and tandem pilot Scott Mac Lowry.
"There is simply nothing like it.
MacLowry and a
few other local pilots take riders up for a machine-free
flight for a modest fee and a short instructional talk
before takeoff. Getting off the ground for the first
time is actually very simple, and requires no previous
training or instruction.Tandem instructor/pilots take
care of launching and landing the gilder; all riders
have to do is run! Strapped into a seat and chest
harness, riders actually sit in front of the
pilot/instructor. Winter or Summer flights can last
up to one hour, taking off from the top of the Telluride
Ski area and landing in the Telluride
Valley. For a tandem ride: Dress in your
warmest windproof ski clothing and a good pair of ankle-
supported boots. The instructor will provide the
helmet, but don't forget a hat and gloves. Be sure to
bring along a camera (with a wrist strap), as you will
have both hands free during the flight to snap some
amazing pictures. |
